We live in a very lonely society. Recent surveys show that more than a third of adult Australians suffer from the very real pain of loneliness on a day to day basis; in August 2022 36% of Australian adults reported experiencing loneliness at least some of the time in the week before.
Life satisfaction is generally also lower for those who identify as living with a mental health condition or a long term health condition. Additionally, Australians with a disability say they are often lonely 29% of the time compared to 17% for those without. It is obvious that something needs to change.
Comfort cards come out of one particular moment in time for me. I was shopping with my disability support worker (one of my only friends at the time) and a young gentleman bounced out of the hallway to say hello.
The young man approached us multiple times, including with introductions of “I’m disabled”. I think he felt like he had to explain why he was communicating to me. To be entirely honest the only reason why I didn’t speak to him was my own crippling social anxiety telling me that no one wanted to be my friend.
That’s where comfort cards come in. No matter how socially awkward you are, how shy you are in a situation or where you sit on the spectrum a comfort card is supposed to bridge that gap.
They are aimed to be completely non confrontational; containing a hand drawn picture and a cute joke and then inviting the recipient to have a coffee.
Why don’t you grab a comfort card and share it with someone you run into? It may be a part of you getting some more friends and helping heal some of that loneliness pain.
